The Last US Ryder Cup Pick – Top 4 Options

3 of 4 captain’s picks are now set (Tiger, Phil, Bryson) …. Who will get left off of the U.S. Ryder Cup team?

*Ryder Cup 2018 will be played at Le Golf National in Paris, France from September 28th – 30th.  U.S. vs Europe.

With the Ryder Cup fast approaching, Jim Furyk, who is the U.S Captain, has a upcoming decisions.  Who will give our country the best chance to beat the Europeans?

The United States won the last Ryder Cup in 2016 on home soil (Hazeltine/MN) but has not won on foreign turf since 1993.  We believe this year will be different as the United States is going to bring lots of firepower across the Atlantic.

The team will total 12 players consisting of 8 automatic qualifiers and 4 captain’s picks.  The top 8 players in points* were locked in after the PGA Championship.

*Points were awarded as follows – 1 per $1,000 earned for PGA events, 1.5 points per $1,000 earned for Major events for players who made cut but did not win, and 2 points per $1,000 earned for Major winners.

In order; Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson, Justin Thomas, Patrick Reed, Bubba Watson, Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler, and Webb Simpson are the automatic qualifiers.

The first 3 captain picks were Tiger Woods, Phil Mickleson, and Bryson DeChambeau. The last selection will be made after The BMW Championship which is scheduled to be completed September 9th.

Who will Furyk select? The first 3 were no brainers, now we’ll se what the captain is made of.  Tiger and Phil who are in the top 12 Ryder Cup ranking (11th & 10th respectively), are obvious decisions because of their abilities on the golf course, experience playing in Ryder Cups, and their ability to fill leadership roles for the U.S. team.  They both bring great marketing value and publicity with them (especially Tiger).

The front runners for the Final US Captain’s pick —

  1. Xander Schauffele
  2. Matt Kuchar
  3. Kevin Kisner
  4. Tony Finau.

There are a couple of guys down the list who have an outside chance.  But it is basically down to these four guys.

Whose name will get called after the BMW Championship to fill that last spot?

With his 2nd place finish this past weekend, Tony Finau is the front runner for that last spot on the U.S. Ryder Cup team.  He was also playing in the same group during the 2nd round of The PGA Championship with Capt. Jim Furyk when he (Finau) made ten birdies during the 2nd round, which tied a tournament record.
Do we even need to see what happens at the Dell & BMW tournaments?  Maybe.

Other players who have had strong seasons and are competing for a captain’s spot are Xander, Kuchar, and Kisner.

Matt Kuchar has the best chance out of these players solely because he is a veteran and very popular amongst the players.  Outside of the politics involved, Kooch’s Ryder Cup record is not great at 6-7-2, but he does have plenty of experience having played in 2010, 2012, 2014 & 2016.

It would not be a shock to see Kuchar get selected, but his T-60th place finish this past weekend certainly did not help his case.

Xander and Kisner are both on the outside looking in at this point.  Xander finished in the 12th and Kisner finished 14th in terms of accumulated Ryder Cup points.  Neither strengthened their cases at the Northern Trust either.  Kisner finished T-73rd and Xander did not make the cut.

If Furyk wants to take youth (on a team with plenty of experience) with the last spot, it looks like Finau is the favorite.

EOP predictions for final Captain’s pick for the Ryder Cup 2018:

Tony Finau
