College Basketball Takeover Pool

The Takeover Pool (aka Head to Head pool) is available each March. Everyone is randomly assigned teams from the 64-team NCAA bracket. To move on, your team must cover the point spread. If your team loses but still covers, you take over the winning team next round. The person who owns the team that covers the spread in the championship game wins the pool.

How To Video

How It Works

  • The pool admin creates the pool, enters a list of names, and everyone is randomly assigned teams from the 64-team NCAA bracket.
  • Works for 2-64 people.
  • Based on the number of entries, each person will start with multiple teams. For example, if 8 people enter, each person would start with 8 teams. Our system will randomly distrubute teams throughout the bracket sections.
  • Each game uses the point spread to determine advancement.
  • If your team wins AND covers or matches the spread, your team advances to the next round.
  • If your team loses but covers the spread, you take over the winning team for the next round.
  • If your team wins but fails to cover, the losing team's owner takes over your winning team.
  • The person who owns the team that covers the spread in the championship game wins the pool.
  • Optional prizes can be awarded to owners after each round based on how many teams they have left, or just to the final winner. For example, anyone who makes the final four gets a prize.
  • Follow along live on your live leaderboard to see the takeover action unfold.
  • Watch as the bracket dynamically updates to show which entries control which teams after each game.

Pricing

FREE - 4 or fewer entries
$20 - more than 4 entries

If you get more than 4 people entered you'll have to pay the $20 fee for the pool. This is only paid by the pool admin. Pools with 4 or fewer entries are free.

Rules

  1. The pool admin randomly assigns teams.
  2. If you have an odd number of entries (or any number that doesn't divide evenly into 64), some teams will be left unassigned, and the pool admin can manually assign later.
  3. Point spreads are taken from Draft Kings at 9am ET each day. Whatever the spread is at 9am ET the day of the game will be used.
  4. Easy Office Pools is the final authority on all spreads. If necessary, we will set the spread to ensure fairness (for example, if a spread is missing or looks incorrect).
  5. How to advance: If your team is favored, you advance by winning and covering the spread (or MATCHING the spread). If your team is the underdog, you advance by winning outright OR by losing but covering the spread—if you lose but cover, you take over the winning team in the next round. If there is no spread (pickem game), your team must win outright.
  6. Pool admins are responsible for deciding the criteria for winning the pool. Reach out to your pool admin to confirm the rules for your pool, as these may vary and are not stored in the system.
  7. Bracket updates will happen near real-time as games are in progres

Why Play Takeover?

The Takeover Head to Head Pool is a fun and competitive way to enjoy March Hoops with friends, family, or coworkers. You don't have to worry about filling out a bracket.

It doesn't matter which team you have since the point spread levels the playing field. It's exciting to see the bracket update in real-time as teams are taken over and advance throughout the tournament.

It's a great way to stay engaged with every game of the tournament, not just the ones involving your favorite teams.

Plus, it's a lot of fun to root for your teams to cover the spread, even if they end up losing the game.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do teams get randomized?

When you create your pool with the random team assignment option, we will randomly distribute names throughout the bracket as evenly as possible. For example: Enter 16 names, everyone gets 4 teams total, 1 from each region. Enter 8 names, everyone gets 8 teams total, 2 teams from each region. Enter 4 names, everyone gets 16 teams total, 4 from each region, in different quadrants of the region Enter any number of names, up to 64, and they will get split as evenly as possible. If the number of names is not divisible by 64, everyone will get the same amount of teams, but some teams will be left unassigned. You can always assign/reassign teams manually from the admin page.

How do you send out invites to the takeover pool?

There is no sign-up link for joining. You collect names from interested people and then create your pool. After you've randomized the teams, we'll provide you with a leaderboard link to share with all participants so they can follow the action.

Do I need all participant names before starting my pool?

That is easiest, so you can just enter all the names then randomly distribute them throughout the bracket. You can always manually assign teams from your pool admin page too.

What is the link to get pool members to sign up?

There is no link you need to share with people to sign up. As the pool admin, once you know who is playing, you enter all their names on the create form to have the system randomly distribute names throughout the bracket sections. Then you can send a text or email to everyone in your pool with the link to follow along.

When is the deadline to have your pool finalized?

You can create a takeover pool up until the first Friday of March Madness. After that, pool creation will be disabled. If you need to change anything with your pool after that date, you can always do that from your pool admin page.

Can I manually adjust teams after randomization?

Yes! You can always assign/reassign teams manually from the admin page after randomization to ensure they're split the way you want.

What if the number of people doesn't divide evenly into 64?

We will distribute the names throughout the bracket so that everyone starts with the same amount of teams. Some teams will be left unassigned, which you can later assign manually as the pool admin (or just leave them).

Will team names update after Selection Sunday?

Yes! Once the bracket is announced, the team assignments will automatically update. If someone is assigned the #1 South Seed before the bracket announcement, they will be assigned that same team after announcement.

Who wins if the spread is exactly matched?

If the favorite wins by exactly the spread (e.g., spread is 2 and they win by 2), the favorite advances. This is considered "covering" the spread. Matching the spread is enough to advance.

How are play-in games handled?

Play-in slots are assigned as one team. You get the seed (e.g., the 11 seed), and whoever wins the play-in game fills that slot automatically.

Can someone have multiple entries or extra teams?

Yes. After creating your pool, you can manually assign extra teams to anyone from the admin page. You can also enter the same person's name multiple times in the entry list.
