Ryder Cup Pool Ideas

Because we offer golf pools for The Masters and other PGA tour events every week, many golf pool enthusiasts have asked if we offer anything for the Ryder Cup. To meet this demand we’ve compiled a couple of different ideas, but would love to hear from you about other Ryder Cup office pool format options in the comments at the bottom of the article.

#1 Salary Cap

  • You must pick 6 golfers from Team Europe and Team USA, collectively (for example, 2 USA and 4 Europe).
  • At least two golfers must be selected from Team USA and two from Team Europe.
  • Using the grid below, the total salary of your 6 golfers cannot exceed $150.
  • Scoring is calculated by awarding individual golfers points throughout the tournament. The players on your team earn points as follows:
    • Fourball and Foursomes award each individual golfer 2 points for a win and 1 point for a tie.
    • Singles matches award each individual golfer 4 points for a win and and 2 points for a tie.
    • At the end of the Ryder Cup the sum of your 6 golfers points determines your team score. The participant with the highest team score wins.
  • Using the grid below, the total salary of your 6 golfers cannot exceed $150.

#2 Ryder Cup Pick Once

  • Points are earned by picking the correct winner of individual matches. Events include Friday Fourball, Friday Foursomes, Saturday Fourball, Saturday Foursomes, and Sunday Singles.
  • 2 pts are awarded for each correct match. 1 point if the match is halved.
  • Here’s the twist: you can only choose a golfer in one of the events. If you choose a golfer in fourball or foursomes he cannot be chosen in singles.
  • Timing is key here since matches aren’t all announced until the day before. You have to have dedicated participants that will send their picks prior to each round, or submit all picks up front and risk one of their picks not making the roster on one of the days.

Example (random draw)

Here are some photos from a draft of the 2014 Ryder Cup participants that I just completed with four friends. We all anted $10, wrote all the names of golfers on a slip of paper, then drew names at random out of a hat to form our teams.

We won’t know how many events our players will be participating in until the captains set the lineups each day, but everyone starts from the same playing field since we drew randomly. Should be fun!
